Background of the Course:
How should a public organization and its staff be managed? How should you manage your financial resources? What should I do with my information technology system? Health managers of subnational health sectors around the world are faced daily with these and other types of managerial questions. WBI's Health System Strengthening Program has developed an online management course applied to the health care system. This course will discuss, in an interactive and facilitated manner, the application of public sector management principles and experiences to health management at the subnational level in developing countries.
Objectives
The objectives of the course are to build the capacity of managers in a decentralized health system to apply public sector management principles and experiences to the management of health at the sub-national level in developing countries.
Course Structure:
The course consists of six modules:
- Module 1: Strategic Planning and Strategic Management covers how to manage strategic planning and implementation of plans
- Module 2: Organizational Behavior provides tools and tips for managing people.
- Module 3: Financial Management concentrates on managing money, sources of financing, and budgeting skills.
- Module 4: Information Systems module describes the importance of information for managers, outlines a systematic approach to developing information systems, and provides examples of how modern technology can improve the efficiency and usefulness of information systems.
- In Module 5 on Communications you will learn how to communicate more clearly and effectively, and build skills in listening and delivering your message.
- The sixth module is on change management. People often resist change, but there are ways to help make people more open and accepting, and willing to embrace new and potentially better ways of delivering health care. If done well, change management can greatly improve the acceptability of health sector reforms, and hence their success or failure.
Target Audience
The course public managers in the health sector at the subnational level.
